LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!!!

Odd title don't you think? But I think if more people took that advice...well, things might work out a little better. Indulge me for just a minute...

I’d like to share a little story with you. It may take a moment of your time, but I think you might appreciate it. I have NEVER put this in writing. I have told a few people and some of those people have told me to tell you. So, here it goes...

I used to appraise commercial real estate, literally all over the US and also the island of Guam. I did this for 9 years. The companies I worked for were wonderful and through the years I worked on some really cool projects: rail road right of ways, golf courses, major commercial projects, etc. Most of these were major multi-million dollar projects; one was a multi-billion dollar project! I say this not to impress you but to give you a little background to help understand where I'm coming from. You'd think I'd be happy working on stuff like that but you know what? I was bored. I didn't like what I was doing. The work became very tedious and uninspiring. I just didn't want to do it anymore. Not a great place to be in actually. I was convinced that I wanted to stay in the commercial real estate industry; I just didn't want to appraise commercial property anymore.

I was actively looking for jobs in the real estate industry when a friend of mine, Greg Welker, asked me to consider working for him at Party Pals. I have to tell you here that I have known Greg since college (San Diego State). In fact his older brother was one of my roommates at SDSU and continues, along with Greg, to be one of my best friends. Anyway, Greg and Hans Petermann had started Party Pals back in 1994. It was now 1997 and Party Pals had begun establishing itself in San Diego County and wanted to expand outside the county in a big way. I grew up in the LA area and had some contacts there. I also had various contacts in Las Vegas and a few other markets. However, when Greg approached me, I was thankful but completely blew it off. I had no sales experience and no interest in his offer. Again, I thought my future was in real estate. In the mean time, I told my parents about Greg's offer.

Trying to make a long story somewhat shorter, my mother called me in April of that year (1997) and asked me to come and visit her and my dad. They had something they wanted to talk to me about in person. Now, I have to tell you, my mom and dad were very religious and faithful people...not whacked out zealots, just very faithful and wonderful people who had a deep faith in God. So, I went to down to visit them. Here's what happened...

My mom told me that they had prayed about my situation and they thought I should take the job Greg had offered me. I know this is going to sound corny, but because of my respect for my mother and her faith, I said “OK, I’ll tell Greg yes.” Without a second thought, and I mean that, once my mother suggested I take the job, I had absolutely NO question as to what my decision should be. I accepted the job Greg and Hans had offered me.

While the journey hasn't been without its rough patches, I have NEVER looked back. I feel totally blessed. I love what I do. I love this industry. I love this company, and I literally owe it ALL to my mother. This is no joke and is not meant to be a feel good story. It's just the honest to God truth. My mother was close enough to God, closer than I'll ever hope to be, to lead her son in the direction he needed to go. I thank her and God DAILY for that.

My mom died one month after I took this job. I don't say that for sympathy, I say that because I absolutely LOVE my mom. I listened to her and because of that, I am where I am today and I absolutely LOVE where I am. I ask God to say Hi to her for me every day.

Moral of the story...

LISTEN TO YOUR MOM! In most cases, she really does know best!

Take care and God bless...
