“WOW... that was AWESOME!”

Ominous title huh?...Not really meant to be…just
drawn from my recent experience at The Special Event
2006 in Dallas.
For those of you who don’t know what TSE
is, it’s essentially an annual trade show
for those in the special event industry…you
might all know Special Event Magazine.
Anyway, if you were there, you’ll know what
I’m talking about. First of all, let me say
that from a business perspective, it was great for
our company. The networking is always phenomenal
and the parties are always fun! However, other than
the NACE party, which was held at Gilley’s,
no event even came close to representing or showcasing
Dallas or Texas. Keep in mind the attendees are
coming from all over the world. Whether it’s
cliché, tired, worn, whatever, when you have
an event showcasing your city, you need to keep
in mind what your audience is expecting…what
their perception of your city is…what would
make them have the most fun and come away with the
feeling…”That was a blast!”.
Well, that didn’t quite happen in Dallas.
Now, Dallas is a modern city but it’s Dallas…it’s
Texas. When people from all over the world are coming
to your city, give them what they want…do
what you do best. And, what is that?...be Dallas…be
Texas. That’s right, western…cowboy…and
everything that goes with it. You can still show
your sophistication and modernity but do it in a
Texas way. Again, the NACE party was at Gilley’s…two
stepping, country music, mechanical bulls…it
was Texas…and that’s what people wanted.
And it was a blast! Trouble is, that was the extent
of the Texas influence. The rest of the week appeared
to be a conscious effort to be anything but Texas
and that was a big mistake. There’s nothing
wrong with showcasing other aspects of your talent
but do it within the context of Texas.
The most egregious example was the final night…the
GALA awards ceremony and dinner. It was anything
but Texas. All of you who were there all know the
problems with the cocktail hour, production issues,
etc. However, it would take too long to go over
the entire evening so let’s just deal with
the atmosphere surrounding dinner.
There were two stages with Cirque acts performing…nothing
wrong with that…I actually love Cirque acts.
But there’s also nothing wrong with theming
the ballroom and event with a western flair. What
we were instead presented with was an obnoxious
laser light show with techno, hip hop, and related
music. Why in the world would you put on a dinner
show like that? Everyone…and I’m not
exaggerating…everyone at my table was hoping
the next meal course would be Tylenol! Not a single
person I talked to enjoyed it.
This was Texas for God’s sake…why not
be proud of that? What in the world is wrong with
doing what you do best?...and that is, Texas. Why
try to be something you’re not? There’s
nothing wrong with being Texas…just do it
up right. Make everyone wish they were Texans…show
them the time of their lives, Texas style! I don’t
know…how ‘bout some country western
music…maybe a local celebrity appearance…show
old clips of the TV show Dallas inviting some audience
participation in Dallas trivia or something…or,
how cool would it have been to have a rodeo during
dinner!!! My point is they tried way too hard to
be something other than Dallas…and it didn’t
work!
The Special Event is coming to Los Angeles next
year. Attendees are going to want a Hollywood production,
maybe a little So Cal beach feel at one of the parties.
That’s what we need to give them…do
what we do best…why would we do anything else?
There’s nothing wrong with expanding one’s
horizons…but maybe experiment here and there
on a smaller scale until you’ve got the experience
and expertise to do it right. But again, for an
event like this…
Do What You Do Best…and Do It Better Than
Anyone Else!!!
Sincerely,
Party Pals
