PARTY PALS STAFF GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND!
“Camp Wana Kura, sponsored by the San Diego Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, is a day camp that offers children with diabetes ages 5-12 years the opportunity to become more independent with their diabetes management, while meeting new friends in their situation. At Camp, they meet and learn from other kids and adult counselors with diabetes what it’s like to live with diabetes… Share strategies for coping with diabetes management and learn about their day-to-day triumphs and challenges…. Make new friends and support systems so they don't have to face diabetes alone… AND MOST IMPORTANT – HAVE FUN!!!
That’s where Party Pals came in.
The camp committee works hard throughout the year planning games, crafts, and special events for each of the campers. This year Camp Wana Kura was fortunate to have the Coconut Tree Climb, and it was the biggest hit of the week. The staff was not only professional, but they also encouraged and cheered on the 130 campers who attempted to climb the tree. One particular story throughout the day that stood out was of a seeing impaired camper who started to climb. After getting half way up the tree, she became nervous since she couldn’t see what to grab to climb up. Joey jumped into a harness and climbed up beside her and coached her so that she could find the foot and hand holds. She made it to the top and was overly excited. It is staff members like yours that makes the experience for our campers a memorable one.”
